Want to experience a different approach to traditional therapy?

Interested in getting your daily workout while receiving the powerful benefits of therapy?

Are you an active person who enjoys talking and moving at the same time?

Therapy in Motion

Since moving our counseling center to our downtown St. Petersburg location, our clinicians provide traditional psychotherapy while walking around downtown and along beautiful waters of Tampa Bay.

The Benefits of Therapy in Motion

Clients who elect for our walk and talk therapy have found that this is a great way of overcoming feeling stuck in traditional therapeutic settings. When walking with a therapist, clients have reported that they are able to think differently and become more inspired to make the changes that they need to in their lives. This is especially true for clients who are looking to get in shape or have hectic work schedules in which health becomes less of a priority.

How Does it Differ from Traditional Therapy?

Therapy in Motion l St. Petersburg l McNulty Counseling

From a psychological perspective, you will receive the same treatment you would as if you were experiencing a normal indoor session. The biggest difference is when we walk and talk, you will be activating different regions of your brains by adding movement. Through this process, clients have reported the ability to being more open with their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors.

How Can Walk & Talk Therapy Help Me?

St. Pete Counseling l McNulty Counseling l 33701

A common symptom of clients experiencing depression, anxiety, and grief/trauma, is withdrawal from social interaction. This isolation leads to higher inactivity and better chances that they’ll stay inside which often makes their situation worse. Walk & Talk counseling exposes clients to the outdoors which can drastically shift awareness to a new set of emotions that they weren’t able to experience while being inside. Studies show that being active and outside has a profound positive impact on physical, emotional, and mental health.

Walk & Talk therapy creates an environment of change and possibility while enriching an already powerful counseling session. Research has consistently shown that physical activity can enhance the mental and physical health of clients and that walking releases endorphins which lead to elevated mood and sense of well-being. Clients can also choose to set the pace of the session from a meditative, relaxing session of walking, to a more active and fast-paced, solution-focused and action-oriented session.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you are concerned about your relationship, and you would both like to work with me, I would initially work with both of you together. After this work, if one of you would like to continue in individual sessions, I could work with only one of you. It is not helpful to move from individual into couple’s work with the same therapist because of potential trust issues.

I am so glad you are dedicated to getting the most out of your sessions. Your active participation and dedication is crucial to your success. After all, we only see each other for a session a week depending on where you are in treatment. It’s the work you do outside of our sessions that will really help you see your personal growth and development.
Unfortunately, this is not possible to say in a general FAQs page. Everyone’s circumstances are unique to them and the length of time therapy can take to allow you to accomplish your goals depends on your desire for personal development, your commitment, and the factors that are driving you to seek therapy in the first place.
Because each person has different issues and goals for therapy, therapy will be different depending on the individual. I tailor my therapeutic approach to your specific needs.
Medication alone cannot solve all issues. What medication does is treat the symptoms. Our work together is designed to explore the root of the issue, dig deep into your behavior and teach strategies that can help you accomplish your personal and/or relational goals. Sometimes medication makes it more difficult to realize the underlying problems so if getting off of medication is something you’re interested in, I would be glad to help you in your journey.
A Licensed Mental Health Counselor has the training and qualifications that are equipped to handle a multitude of problems. They can help you approach your situation in a new way– teach you new skills, gain different perspectives, listen to you without judgment or expectations, and help you listen to yourself. Furthermore, therapy is completely confidential. You won’t have to worry about others “knowing my business.” Lastly, if your situation provokes a great deal of negative emotion, if you’ve been confiding in a friend or family member, there is the risk that once you are feeling better you could start avoiding that person so you aren’t reminded of this difficult time in your life.
Not at all. People who ask for help know when they need it and have the ability to reach out. Everyone needs help now and then. You already have some strengths that you’ve used before, that for whatever reason isn’t working right now. Perhaps this problem feels overwhelming and is making it difficult to access your past strengths. In our work together, I’ll help you identify what those strengths are and how to implement them again in what is happening now.
